What Is Stress?

A human stressor is simply anything which takes a person’s mental, physical or emotional aspects out of equilibrium. It isn’t necessarily negative, it just is. It is when equilibrium cannot be regained that negative effects start to build up. If our body is low in fuel, we typically feel hunger. If we take in what is required and it is properly processed, equilibrium is regained and the stress signal, e.g. hunger, disappears. Problems occur when we interpret the stress signal incorrectly, or provide the wrong solution e.g. wrong type of food, or the processing goes awry. Other examples might include overwork without adequate periods of rest, excessive lifting without ensuring correct techniques to limit the strain on muscles, or continual intake of foods which are inappropriate for good mental, physical and emotional health.

Positive Stress Management

Positive stress management is about recognising the stress signal, determining solutions to regain equilibrium and staying alert as to how well your solution worked. A tricky human attribute is the ability to adapt to dubious solutions while shielding the conscious awareness from the real costs. It can be a while before signs and symptoms raise the alarm.

By this time, it can be quite a challenge to undo the damage done. But with commitment, good information, a solid support system and a willingness to act on new perspectives, much can be achieved.

Effective Stress Management

Holistic therapies, especially those whose model of health sits easily within a comprehensive, logical view of reality, are ideally placed to support individuals who are consciously committed to improved health. Practitioners are intimately aware of the profound relationships between effective stress relief and improved health and well-being.

Documentation has been published to provide guidance on evidence available concerning the effectiveness of acupuncture on various diseases (World Health Organisation, 2002). This is helpful. However, disease labels tend to separate the so called disease from the patient. This limit in understanding can lead individuals to believe they would not benefit when actually they might.

Our power both as patients and therapists lies in the fact that we must recognise our whole selves and use whatever means at our disposal to reintegrate and harmonise those elements which have become cut off, disorganised and diseased. Holistic modalities embrace this knowledge, working on conscious levels but also on those organising levels of the patient which are below conscious awareness and thus are less prone to logical left-brain resistance.

Note: It must be stated that holistic therapies are not a substitute for orthodox medical advice from a properly qualified practitioner and nothing contained on this page or website should be construed nor is intended to be used for medical diagnosis or treatment. If you have medical concerns you should consult a qualified healthcare practitioner. Ideally all healing providers will provide sound information and advice to support in your pursuit of great health.
