Below I have provided some information on Reflexology that you
may find of interest.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to
contact me.
A Brief
History Of Reflexology
Evidence of early Egyptian forms of reflexology
was originally discovered in the artwork adorning various ancient
tombs. More recently, most of the reflexology practised in the
west is based on the Zone therapy proposed by Dr William Fitzgerald
early in the last century. Very basically Dr Fitzgerald identified
zones and areas of the feet which had reflexive relationships with
specific areas of the body. This knowledge was progressively refined
and developed into the reflexology treatments commonly available
today.

My Approach To Reflexology
There are six meridians directly manipulated while
working on the feet, and there are also, I feel, strong relationships
between certain reflex areas and Chinese medicine (see my page
on Acupuncture). For these reasons, Chinese medicine both influences
and informs my reflexology practice, adding a rich extra dimension
to zone therapy. Inge Dougans’ Complete Illustrated Guide
to Reflexology provides a good background read on this way of working.

Is Reflexology For Everyone?
Reflexology can be utilised and enjoyed by most
people. However there are a few medical conditions where reflexology
would be inappropriate. Such examples would include the presence
of contagious skin complaints such as verrucas or athletes foot.
In such cases treatment to remove the condition would be advised
before a reflexology session could take place. Occasionally, the
presence of some medical conditions require that your medical doctor
expresses he has no objections to you receiving reflexology. In
the latter case a quick phone call to your GP before your first
appointment will usually provide the required consent. If you are
in any doubt, do please call or email me before booking so that
you are not disappointed on the day of your treatment.

What Happens During Reflexology Treatment?
A thorough medical history will be taken in order
to ensure that your reflexology treatment is both safe and effective.
The details that you supply are kept in the strictest confidence.
The fuller a picture you can provide, the more comprehensive a
treatment you will receive. You will also be asked what your treatment
goals are. These might simply be one off relaxation and pampering.
You may however have more a more specific goal(s) e.g. the relief
of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). For such cases you may want
to consider a course of treatments to build up a more long term
cumulative effect. Or you might want to address complex challenges.
If you are tackling problems which include several treatments,
each consultation will include charting progress, so treatment
plans can be adapted to achieve best results. It is an honour to
treat regular clients, but a primary goal at HealersWork is to
get good results as quickly as possible. This makes treatment cost
effective. But even more importantly, it empowers you to reclaim
control over your own health and well-being.
Once the consultation is complete, treatment begins. You will
be invited to recline either on a couch or, in a reflexology chair
which is rather like a garden chair and very comfortable. All you
need to remove are socks and shoes. The feet are wiped down with
surgical spirit or a surgical gel before application of massage
medium, which is usually a reflexology specific powder, and reflexology
treatment begins. Usually treatment concludes with application
of a refreshing but nourishing foot cream. A full reflexology treatment
usually takes between fifty minutes and one hour. Findings, sensitivities
and their possible causes are discussed either as they arise or
following treatment. This usually depends on whether the client
has fallen asleep!
If you are just thinking about whether my treatment is
for you, please contact me so you can get any questions answered.
I restrict
the number of clients I see in order to maintain a high level of
research and preparation between appointments for each case.
Every client
is unique. For this reason I cannot guarantee immediate first appointments,
but I can pop your name on a waiting list for first option when
appointments do become available.

What To Expect Following Reflexology Treatment
Following your reflexology treatment, aftercare
and lifestyle advice will be discussed as appropriate.

Reflexology in the Corporate Environment
It is easy to administer reflexology in the
workplace so long as the environment is safe**,
appropriate
and you have the permission of the person in charge.
This is ideal for the individual with a busy schedule,
work or family commitments, and ideal for those corporations
looking at introducing the benefits of a therapist within their
working environment to help combat stress, back pain, etc,
that might otherwise have a diverse effect on moral and staff
attendance.
Reflexology in the workplace is performed with the client reclining
in a reflexology chair. The treatment area should have hand washing
facilities nearby and offer privacy. If you are uncertain of the
suitability of your workplace, please do contact
me to discuss the matter.
The cost of consultation is as described on the Terms
and Fees Page. However if car parking fees are incurred these are payable
by the client at a minimum of two hours.

Reflexology in the Home
/ Other Venue
It is easy to administer reflexology
in the home or any other appropriate alternative
environment, such as your workplace, so long as the
environment is
safe**,
suitable and you have permission.
This is ideal if you have a busy schedule, work or family commitments
which make it difficult for you to schedule a salon visit. It’s
a great excuse to really relax and unwind without feeling guilty!
You may wish to arrange supervision of children
and or pets for the duration of treatment if appropriate. The treatment
area should ensure privacy for the consultation.
The cost of consultation is as described on the
Terms and Fees Page. However if car parking fees are incurred these
are payable
by the client at a minimum of two hours.
