A Brief History Of Acupuncture

From many thousands of years of recording observations of the natural order of all things, the Chinese developed practices to restore natural order when it ‘collapses’. Acupuncture is just one of these practices and therefore just one element of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). Others include TCM Herbs and Qi-Gong. Acupuncture makes use of ‘meridians’, the energy pathways which form part of every human. Though meridians have been acknowledged and utilised for many years in the East, only recently has the west developed techniques which are able to verify their existence. Acupuncture points provide gateways or access points into the meridians. Once accessed, the meridian flows can be regulated with the needles, restoring harmony and thus reducing disease and disharmony. You can find more information on acupuncture from the British Acupuncture Council’s website at www.acupuncture.org.uk.

My Approach To Acupuncture

The most compelling element of TCM is its common sense foundation in the observation of the natural order of all things. Although TCM’s history is rooted in ancient China and therefore may seem alien to the west, the natural order of all things, wherever they are, remains constant. So my approach is to apply TCM principles to all aspects of my own practice of holistic medicine.

Is Acupuncture For Everyone?

There are very few medical conditions where acupuncture would be inappropriate. However if you are receiving medical care it makes sense to let your GP or consultant know you are planning to have acupuncture. This is particularly appropriate if you are taking prescribed medicines. For example, if you are taking prescribed medicines and your goal is to reduce them, your medical practitioner should be aware of this. It is their role to monitor your medications safely and effectively. If you are in any doubt, do please call or email me before booking so that you are not disappointed on the day of your treatment.

What Happens During Acupuncture Treatment?

A thorough history will be taken in order to ensure that your acupuncture treatment is both safe and effective. This includes medical history, but also includes questions unfamiliar in the western context. These nevertheless help provide a good ‘landscape’ picture of you. The details that you supply are kept in the strictest confidence. The fuller a picture you can provide, the more comprehensive a treatment you will receive. Usually, your tongue will be examined (visually!), and your pulses will be assessed from a Chinese perspective. You will also be asked what your treatment goals are. Each subsequent consultation then includes charting progress, so treatment plans can be adapted to achieve best results. It is an honour to treat regular clients, but a primary goal at HealersWork is to get good results as quickly as possible. This makes treatment cost effective. But even more importantly, it empowers you to reclaim control over your own health and well-being.

Once the consultation is complete, a points prescription is selected and the treatment begins. You only need to remove clothes that enable the insertion of needles, and towels are used to maintain modesty. Needles are inserted and retained usually for about twenty minutes while you just relax and let them do their work. Once the needles are removed, you can dress and continue your normal daily activities. Do ensure that you do not have an acupuncture appointment on an empty stomach. This can occasionally lead to light headedness / dizziness and / or fainting.

If you are just thinking about whether my treatment is for you, please contact me so you can get any questions answered. I restrict the number of clients I see in order to maintain a high level of research and preparation between appointments for each case. Every client is unique. For this reason I cannot guarantee immediate first appointments, but I can pop your name on a waiting list for first option when appointments do become available.

Acupuncture in the Corporate Environment

It is easy to administer acupuncture in the workplace so long as the environment is safe**, appropriate and you have the permission of the person in charge. This is ideal for the individual with a busy schedule, work or family commitments, and ideal for those corporations looking at introducing the benefits of a therapist within their working environment to help combat stress, back pain, etc, that might otherwise have a diverse effect on moral and staff attendance.

Acupuncture in the workplace is performed on a portable couch which is both sturdy and comfortable. The treatment room must safely accommodate the couch with room enough for me to work around it. It must also accommodate a stool (which I will bring) for me to sit on. The treatment area should have hand washing facilities providing hot and cold running water nearby and offer privacy. If you are uncertain of the suitability of your workplace, please do contact me to discuss the matter.

The cost of consultation is as described on the Terms and Fees Page. However if car parking fees are incurred these are payable by the client at a minimum of two hours.
